Gangotri, celebrated place of Hindu pilgrimage in Uttarakhand state in northern India. Gangothri Dham is the birthplace of the River Ganga. Popular Hindu legends suggests that the River Ganga took birth here because Lord Shiva decided to release the mighty river from the locks of his hair. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, Gangothri Dham is the second of the four temples at the Chota Char Dham Route. The foundation to this temple was laid by Nepalese General Amar Singh Thapa. Gaumukh, the sacred snout of the Gangotri Glacier is where the mighty river begins its journey. This venue is located about 19 kilometers from Gangotri. Some popular religious locations like the Bhagirath Shila and the Pandava Gufa are also present close to the Gangothri Dham.
Gangotri Winter (November to April)

Summer (May to June)

Monsoon (July to mid-September)
It makes difficult to reach the temple due to various landslides. Pilgrims are suggested to avoid travel during monsoon season.
The best time to visit the holy city of Gangotri is from April to June and September to November. The temple is open from last week of April to second week of November.
Flight: The nearest airport from Gangotri is Jolly Grant, which is located just 26 km from Rishikesh. From the airport, the travelers need to take either a taxi or the luxury buses to reach Gangotri.
Train: The nearest railway station is located at Rishikesh, about 249 kms away, from where one has to hire a cab or take a luxury bus to reach Gangotri. Thus Haridwar serves as the best railway station if you are visiting Gangotri by train.
Road: Gangotri is easily accessible by road with most of the major cities of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and NCR region. It is located at a distance of 452 Km from Delhi and 229 Km from Rishikesh.
